Linking to the Bible and other texts with chapter:verse cross referencing.
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

Author: zeimusu

Description:
Many pages make Bible citations. These have a (fairly) standard form,
John 3:16. I am creating this bug to investigate the possiblity of
making these references into links, in a manner similar to ISBN links.

What I am proposing is a wiki link to [[John 3:16]] or perhaps [[Bible, John
3:16]] should make a link to a generated page, giving a choice of bibles and
links to that verse. There is a list of online bibles at the bible page on
wikipedia.

This is being discussed at the wikipedia village pump proposals page.

If we're going to do this, I'd suggest the syntax of <bible>John 3:16</bible>,
rather than just linking everything. This could then be implemented as a link to
Special:Bible (or something similar) with an appropriate query string to
generate the automatic links. It shouldn't link into the article namespace, in
my opinion (if you want an article namespace link, make a normal link).

Not sure why we would want to link to bible verses in a bug tracker. Reassigning to
MediaWiki extensions.

I think this would be a very useful feature for Wikipedia. There's often need to
reference Bible passages in Wikipedia articles, probably more need than to
reference any other single piece of literature, and it's often unsatisfactory to
link to one particular version.

Extension to parse <bible> tags and link to kjv on wikisource

Caveat,
I've never written any php before this, I've just followed the recipe on one of
the wikimedia pages. Moreover this extension is essentially untested. This
patch doesn't do what I would want, that is link to a special page, because I
have no idea how or if that is done. It just trys to link to The king James
version on wikisource

This can easily be done with templates. See <a
href="http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vorlage:Bibel">Template:Bibell</a> in the
German Wikipeda.

Templates definitely seem to be the answer here.

I think this can be closed. Templates to solve this are widely implemented, and more versatile.
